Check the fluid level with the platform fully lowered, not raised.

2. Hydraulic Fluid Leaks
Symptoms: fresh drips under the rear of the truck, a platform that sinks slowly overnight, or lifting that gets weaker as the day goes on.
Common causes: cracked or chafed hoses, worn O‑rings and cylinder seals, a damaged pump housing, or a system that has been over‑pressurised by overloading.
How to check it yourself: clean the whole area, run the gate through several full cycles, then look for fresh wet spots — old grime tells you nothing. Run a finger down each cylinder rod: scoring or pitting means the seal is going. Tighten loose fittings with a wrench, but do not over‑torque them.

When it becomes our job: torsion springs are under serious tension and are not a driveway repair. Bent arms and misalignment need to be measured and straightened properly, not forced.
4. Remote, Switch and Wiring Failures
Symptoms: no response from the control, intermittent operation, or a gate that works from one station and not another.
Common causes: a dead battery in a wireless remote, a failed solenoid or relay, water sitting in the control box, or corroded pins in a connector.
How to check it yourself: try the backup wired switch if the unit has one — that instantly tells you whether the problem is the control or the gate. Replace the remote battery. Clean connections and pack them with dielectric grease.
When it becomes our job: solenoids, relays and control boxes. We stock them for most brands and can convert an older gate to a wireless system if that suits how you load.
5. Uneven Lift or a Tipping Platform
Symptoms: the platform sits higher on one side, shakes during a cycle, or tips noticeably once there is weight on it.
Common causes: one cylinder losing pressure faster than the other, a stretched chain or cable on one side, worn rollers, or a cracked weld at a mounting point.
How to check it yourself: raise the empty gate to bed height and sight across it. Any visible lean empty will be far worse loaded. Stop using it until it is looked at — an uneven platform is how loads and people come off the back of a truck.

Cables, Chains and Rollers
On rail and cable‑style gates, the running gear wears in a predictable way: the gate gets noisy, then jerky, then it stops folding cleanly. Frayed cable strands and elongated chain links are visible if you look, and both are cheap to replace on a schedule and expensive to replace after they let go. Platform and Structural Damage
Bent platforms, cracked welds and loose mounting brackets come from curbs, docks and overloading.
